Liquid vitamin and mineral supplements

September 27th, 2009

We need to look for simple, convenient solutions, and supplements and fortified foods can help fill that bill.

You will want to discuss your own vitamin regimen with your doctor. Although we don’t need a lot of each vitamin or mineral, we do need a variety. While the debate rages and the science changes like the wind, we can continue to use vitamin and mineral supplements in a reasonable manner to support health and for those physical conditions they are known to help. I do believe there is more evidence to support the use of liquid vitamin and mineral supplements than not. Again, keep in mind that these supplements can help in moderation, but too much may be toxic.

Here is a daily regimen I am comfortable with:

· A general multivitamin formulated with antioxidants (taken once daily with food)

· Calcium: 500 to 1,500 milligrams daily, depending on your age and quality of your diet

· Vitamin D: 200 IU daily for people nineteen to fifty years old; 400 IU daily for those fifty-one to seventy years old; and 600 IU daily for those seventy-one years and older. (An average multivitamin tablet contains 400 IU of vitamin D. Therefore, your daily liquid vitamin and mineral supplements should help provide the recommended amount of vitamin D.)

· Omega-3 fatty acids: Talk to your doctor about the proper dosage for you, based on your cardiovascular health.
